Heat Disorders
Description
HEATSTROKE
- Sudden headache, dizziness, and fatigue
- Skin is hot to the touch and dry
- Increased pulse and respirations
- Disorientation
- Seizure
- Loss of conciousness
HEAT EXHAUSTION
- Excessive sweating without fluid replacement
- Fatigue and weakness
- Slow pulse
- Clammy, pale, cold skin
- Dizziness
- Headache
HEAT CRAMPS
- Occur after exercise in high temperatures
- Occurs when fluids are lost through excessive sweating, but are replaced only by water (no electrolytes)
- Onset is abrupt
- Muscles spasm, and pain is present
Prevention
HEATSTROKE
- Wear a hat, long sleeved loose shirt, and long loose pants (the lighter the color, the better)
- Drink plenty of fluids
HEAT EXHAUSTION
- Wear a hat, long sleeved loose shirt, and long loose pants (the lighter the color, the better)
- Drink plenty of fluids, including sports drinks
HEAT CRAMPS
- Drink Sports drinks regularly
- Exercise in moderation
- Eat foods which contain sodium (check with your physician if you have hypertension)

HEATSTROKE
- NO SELF TREATMENT-GET MEDICAL HELP IMMEDIATELY. HEATSTROKE IS A LIFE THREATENING EMERGENCY AND UNLESS IT IS ENERGETICALLY TREATED, DIRE RESULTS CAN FOLLOW

- Force fluids, especially sports drinks , cool off

Seek Help When...
HEATSTROKE
- ANY OF THE SYMPTOMS ABOVE ARE PRESENT
HEAT EXHAUSTION
- If no better within 30 minutes, seek Medical Help Immediately
HEAT CRAMPS
- If muscles remain cramped for more than 30 minutes
