Diabetes


Description

Changes in diet, daily activities, exercise, and the timing of meals can contribute changes in your control of diabetes.

Prevention

  • Discuss your travel in Mexico with your physician before you leave
  • Make sure that your diabetes is under control before you leave
  • Bring your test strips and glucose testing machine with you to Mexico with an adequate quantity of test strips
  • Bring your insulin and/or oral medications on your trip (use an insulated lunchbox to keep your insulin cool)
  • Keep you meals on schedule
  • Follow your diet
  • Do not overexert yourself or put a strain on your body

Self Treatment

Follow the advice of your physician, and use a sliding scale for your insulin if so instructed.

Seek Help When...

Any of the warning signs that your are not managing your diabetes are present, such as:

  • Infection (particularly skin)
  • Extreme thirst
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Lethargy
  • Sweating
  • Hunger
  • Confusion
  • Stuper
  • Blurred vision
  • Numbness
  • Tingling
